Village To Receive $6.6 Million as part of $60 Million towards Transformational Green Infrastructure Projects in 13 Communities Around New York State
Thursday, October 17 (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) – The Village of Mamaroneck has been awarded $6.6 million from New York State for the Village’s Floodplain Restoration Effort to mitigate flood risks in a designated high-risk area by creating two floodplain benches. The project will increase flood storage capacity and improve water quality with natural sediment filtering. The $6.6 million grant is part of a larger $60 million in Green Resiliency Grant (GRG) funding that will support 13 transformative green infrastructure projects across New York State. Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Sharon Torres said, “While this is the first of many steps towards mitigating the effects of flooding in our Village, it is an immensely important step. Our sincere thanks go to our NYS Representative Steve Otis and Senator Shelley Mayer, who have been our strongest advocates and supporters. Thank you to Governor Hochul for creating this opportunity to support our communities through these challenges.”
“Hurricanes Helene and Milton are another reminder of the urgency needed in investing in resiliency measures to keep our communities safe,” Governor Hochul said. “Strong and sustainable infrastructure is our first line of defense. Together with our state's unprecedented clean water investments, the Environmental Bond Act is shoring up our infrastructure and protecting our communities for generations to come.”
“Congratulations to the Village of Mamaroneck, Mayor Sharon Torres, the entire Board of Trustees, and Village staff on the award of this $6.6 million NYS Green Resiliency Grant to help fund our flood mitigation project,” said New York State Assemblyman Steve Otis. “This state funding comes in addition to New York State’s already allocated share of $23.35 million towards the Federal Army Corps of Engineers Mamaroneck Sheldrake program. Senator Mayer and I have been working with state agencies to bring additional programs like the NYS GRG funding to supplement the Army Corps projects. This is an important assist to the Village.”
State Senator Shelley B. Mayer said, “I am so pleased the Village of Mamaroneck has been awarded $6.6 million through the Green Resiliency Grant to go towards floodplain restoration. Like many of our communities, particularly along the Sound Shore, the Village of Mamaroneck has been devastated by the increasingly severe incidents of flooding. The Village has worked tirelessly to recover and build back stronger, and this funding is critical to help protect our community and mitigate flooding. I am grateful to Mayor Torres and the Board for their leadership on this issue.”
This project will both complement the Army Corps Plan and help reduce its cost. We appreciate that our state and federal partners recognize the effects of flooding on our municipalities and are collaboratively helping communities like ours through funding opportunities. Flood mitigation remains the highest priority for the Village of Mamaroneck and this grant allows the Village to move forward on flood mitigation efforts that will allow more capacity to carry water to the sound, and away from flood prone areas.
