The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum NFIP requirements. As a result, flood insurance premium rates are discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the community actions meeting the three goals of the CRS: (1) reduce flood losses; (2) facilitate accurate insurance rating; and (3) promote the awareness of flood insurance.NFIP/CRS Important Links for Residents and Businesses

Community Raying System

In 2014, the Village of Mamaroneck has received a formal determination from FEMA on our application to become a member of the Community Rating System Program. Our official rating is an "8", which means that many residents will receive up to a 10% reduction on all flood insurance premiums that became effective after October 1, 2014.

For CRS participating communities, flood insurance premium rates are discounted in increments of 5%; i.e., a Class 1 community would receive a 45% premium discount, while a Class 9 community would receive a 5% discount (a Class 10 is not participating in the CRS and receives no discount). The CRS classes for local communities are based on 18 creditable activities, organized under four categories:

  • Public Information (Series 300) This series credits programs that advise people about the flood hazard, flood insurance, and ways to reduce flood damage. These activities also provide data needed by insurance agents for accurate flood insurance rating. They generally serve all members of the community and work toward all three goals of the CRS.
  • Mapping and Regulations (Series 400) This series credits programs that provide increased protection to new development. These activities include mapping areas not shown on the FIRM, preserving open space, enforcing higher regulatory standards, and managing storm water. The credit is increased for growing communities.
  • Flood Damage Reduction (Series 500) This series credits programs for areas in which existing development is at risk. Credit is provided for a comprehensive floodplain management plan, relocating or retrofitting floodprone structures, and maintaining drainage systems. These activities work toward the first goal of the CRS, damage reduction.
  • Flood Preparedness (Series 600) This series credits flood warning, levee safety, and dam safety programs. These activities work toward the first and third goals of the CRS, damage reduction and hazard awareness

Submittal of Mamaroneck & Sheldrake River Draft GRR for Review (UNCLASSIFIED) -- Army Corps of Engineers Flood Study Release

Please note that the draft General Reevaluation Report and Environmental Impact Statement, for the Mamaroneck and Sheldrake River Basin, Village of Mamaroneck, New York, Flood Risk Management study has been posted for concurrent Public, NAD and HQUSACE(OWPR) review. Click here (it may take several hours before the documents actually populate the webpage. Please refresh your browser to determine if the documents are available).

The documents have also been submitted to the Federal Register that will post on 29 January 2016 which officially starts the 45 day review period (review period is scheduled to end 14 March 2016). The District will also submit a Press Release on 29 January 2016 with the notification of document availability.

Please note that next week, the District will mail the Village of Mamaroneck (Attn:  Richard Slingerland) a hard copy of the report to place at the local library.
